Historical Sites Castles and Ruins |
La Rochefoucauld is reputed to be one of the best in France,
and was the Chateau of Francois 1 (contemporary of Henry
VIII). Visit the ruined castle at Bouteville and Medieval
citadel of Confolens - Ruins of the Augustine Notre Dame
de Chatres near Julienne (North of Bourg Charente). Aubeterre-sur-Dronne
is a picturesque white village, the church (Eglise) St
Jean, dug out of the white chalky cliff, dates back to
6th Century. Visit the old amphitheatre and Roman buildings
in Saintes and Le Chateau de Rochebrune at Etagnac. To
the north visit the Eglise St Pierre in Aulnay, it has
remained the same since the time of the great pilgrimages
and the Abbaye du St-Saveur at Charroux once the richest
abbey in the region, now a ruin open to the sky with a
museum with some superb sculpture from the original portal.
The 'Truce of God', the earliest known attempt to regulate
war was signed here. |

Ask at the Tourist office for details of Horse jumping
and shows. Riding is available in the area. Each year
in August 9-12 Aug an international horse jumping show
is held in front of the castle at Chalais. |
Hot air balooning (montgolfieres) |
Coup d’Europe held in August each year at Mainfonds. 1st
day to Sainte-Souline, 2nd day to Angouleme, 3rd day to
Cognac, 4th day to Mainfonds. |
Kayaking |
Rent from the outlet by the bridge in Jarnac and kayak
to Bourg Charente. ½ day and day trips with return by
coach can be arranged. Every Friday the canoe club of
Jarnac arranges an evening trip followed by a barbeque
- tel 05 45 81 32 01 for reservations. |
MARKETS |
Every Sunday in Segonzac, with the biggest and best on
the 1st Sunday of each month. Rouillac on the 27th of
every month the whole town becomes a street market. Jarnac
covered market every day with an open market on the 1st

Microlite flights |
For 20€ you can have a flight in a microlite over La Cour
des Cloches. About 500 metres from La Cour des Cloches
on the way to Segonzac after the avenue of burgundy trees
(prunus) on the left you will see a sign to Bel Air. Flights
available on Sat afternoon and on Sundays. |

BORDEAUX - Spend a day in Bordeaux, be sure to walk around
the old city centre and visit some of the famous Bordeaux
wineries. There is a helium balloon here too, CHARENTE
MARITIME (and the coast) visit Talmont (see above), ROYAN
Astonishing boat marina (Good Restaurants: Cardinal Sur
Mer or Saint Georges), Rochefort, LA ROCHELLE, Isle d'Oleron,
and Isle de Re. If time permits spend a day on Isle de
Aix, take the boat from Fouriers at about 9 or 10h00 -
there are no cars on this little island which is only
6km long, but you can hire cycles -lunch at Les Paillotes
tel 05 46 84 66 24 if possible. THE DORDOGNE. Visit the
porcelain factories at Limoges (Also take in a visit to
the village of Oradour-sur- Glane near Limoges. All 650
inhabitants were killed by the Nazis on 10 June 1944 as
reprisals to the French Resistance movement. The ruins
of the village have been kept as a shrine to them and
a new village has been built nearby. L'AQUITAINE The famous
Lot river area is worth a visit if time permits. |
Paper Factory |
The Internationally renowned Le Musee du papier D'Angoumois
at Fleurac, Tel 05 45 91 50 69. They still make paper
in the traditional 18th-century manner. |

River Cruises |
"CHABOT"
Riverboat rides from Jarnac to Bourg Charente (11am 3.00pm
and 4.30pm). Every Thursday they arrange a picnic trip

SHOPPING |
In France shops close for lunch and this could be from
12 to 3pm or 1 to 2pm. In Jarnac all shops closed Sunday
and Mondays and this applies to most small towns. Supermarkets
are mainly open at lunch time and are open 7 days a week
but only during the morning on Sundays. Auchan, by far
the biggest supermarket in Cognac is closed on Sundays

Charente to Bassac. You can't get lost if you follow the
